About Esperanza Spalding...

Despite a difficult upbringing in a multi-lingual, single parent home amid
economically adverse circumstances, Esperanza Spalding demonstrates the
meaning of perservervance, moral character and hard work. At age 23 she
has become an international touring performing artist who is described by
The Seattle Times as: "She sings and plays bass at the same time and does
a sort of intrepretive dance as she plays....Her analysis of what’s going
on in jazz today is perceptive." This young prodigy turned pro might well
be the hope for the future of jazz and instrumental music according to a
profile in HEADSUP International. She began playing the violin at age four
after viewing a taping of Yo Yo Ma performing on an episode of Mister
Roger’s Neighborhood and hasn’t looked back since. At age 20 she became
the youngest instructor ever hired at the prestigous Berklee College of
Music - an appointment making her the youngest faculty member in the
school’s history. She has played violin with The Chamber Society of Oregon
where she was elevated at age 15 to concertmaster, club circuits playing
blues, funk, hip-hop and a variety of other styles on the bass; is the
recipient of the Boston Jazz Society’s scholarship for outstanding
musicianship and has performed with such notables as Michel Camilo
(pianist), vibraphonist Dave Samuels, Stanley Clarke (bassist), Pat
Metheny (guitarist), Patti Austin (singer) and saxophonists Donald
Harrison and Joe Lavano. Ms Spalding composes and sings her lyrics in
three (3) languages. She is a rising star who possesses mesmerizing
talents as an instrumentalist, vocalist and composer. This is a concert
you will not want to miss!

What others are saying:

"Whether exploding into vocalese or making her bass solo sound like a horn,
she’s a spark plug who dances as she grooves through a funked-up and
rocked-out repertoire.
"
—Billboard “Face to Watch”

"Esperanza has got a lot: accomplished jazz improvisation, funk, scat
singing, Brazilian vernacular rhythm and vocals in English, Portuguese and
Spanish. At its center is a female bassist, singer and bandleader, one
whose talent is beyond question."

—New York Times

"There are many gifted singers in jazz today, and no shortage of
accomplished acoustic bass players. But few jazz artists can be both.
Esperanza Spalding’s new album, Esperanza, blends her soaring vocals and
her deep bass lines."

—NPR’s All Things Considered
